Would you like to join your family, friends and neighbors to help keep Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor clean and healthy?  Raise oysters this summer!

Since 2017 the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, Friends of the Bay, the villages of Laurel Hollow and Bayville, the towns of Oyster Bay and Huntington, Cornell Cooperative Extension and numerous other organizations, along with hundreds of residents, have established a community oyster gardening program.

As part of this program, oyster gardeners (residents like you) are provided with everything they need - no experience required!  This includes basic training, equipment, and ongoing support necessary to successfully grow-out juvenile oysters in floats on community moorings or on their own docks for enhancement purposes only (i.e. not for consumption).  Each shellfish garden consists of up to 1,000 oysters to grow out in one or two cages.  Participants work together to clean their floats and measure their oysters at least twice per month June - September.

Past participants have found this is a great activity for their families (kids love seeing all the marine life!) or organizations (scouts, garden clubs, churches, schools) to learn more about their local waters, meet friendly like-minded neighbors, and help the harbor.  At the end of the season, you and all the other gardeners are rewarded with the soon-to-be-famous year end Oyster Roast!  At this event we celebrate our success and take home some mature oysters from our waters (not ones we have grown) to enjoy as a thank you!

Recommended participation fee is $100/garden to cover all related costs. Donations to support the program or sponsor a cage in someone's name are encouraged as are volunteers!
